Can You Go to the Gym After a Tattoo

Balancing your fitness routine with tattoo aftercare.

A new tattoo is an exciting addition, but if hitting the gym is part of your daily routine, you might be wondering how soon you can get back to your workouts. At OSCO, we’re here to help you navigate gym sessions while keeping your healing tattoo safe.

Is It Safe to Go to the Gym After a Tattoo?
It’s generally recommended to wait at least 48–72 hours before returning to the gym. During this initial period, your tattoo is at its most vulnerable, as the skin is still healing and susceptible to irritation or infection. For more intense workouts or those involving heavy equipment, waiting up to 7–10 days is advised, depending on the tattoo's size and placement.

Risks of Gym Workouts with a Fresh Tattoo

  • Sweating: Excessive sweat can irritate your tattoo and introduce bacteria, potentially leading to      infections.

  • Friction: Gym clothing or equipment can rub against your tattoo, causing discomfort or damage to the healing skin.

  • Contaminated Surfaces: Gyms are shared spaces and equipment can harbour bacteria that may come into contact with your fresh tattoo.

Tips for Going to the Gym Safely

  • Focus on Low-Impact Workouts: Start with exercises that don’t involve the tattooed area. For example, if you have a tattoo on your arm, focus on leg workouts or stretching.

  • Wear Loose Clothing: Choose breathable, loose-fitting clothing that won’t rub against your tattoo. Avoid tight fabrics like compression wear over the tattooed area.

  • Wipe Down Equipment: Always clean gym equipment before and after use to minimise exposure to bacteria.

  • Clean Your Tattoo Immediately Afterward: Gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and an unscented antibacterial soap after your workout. Pat it dry with a clean towel and apply a thin layer of tattoo-safe moisturiser.

  • Avoid Swimming and Saunas: Pools, hot tubs, and saunas should be avoided until your tattoo is fully healed, as prolonged moisture and bacteria in these environments can harm your tattoo.

When Can You Fully Return to the Gym?
You can typically resume your full workout routine once your tattoo has completely healed. For most people, this takes 2–4 weeks, depending on the size, location, and how well the tattoo has been cared for during the healing process.
