Tattoo Care first 48 hours

Protect Your New Ink with the Right Aftercare Routine

The first 48 hours after getting a tattoo are critical to ensuring proper healing and maintaining the longevity of your ink. Taking the right steps immediately after leaving the tattoo studio helps prevent infection, minimises irritation, and ensures your tattoo heals with vibrant colour and definition.

When you first leave the tattoo studio, your artist will cover the fresh tattoo with a sterile bandage or plastic wrap. This protective layer shields the tattoo from bacteria, dirt, and friction. It is generally recommended to leave this covering on for at least three hours, though some artists may suggest keeping it on longer. Once it's time to remove the bandage, wash your hands thoroughly before touching the area to prevent introducing bacteria.

Cleaning your tattoo for the first time is an essential step in the aftercare process. Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free antibacterial soap to gently wash away any excess ink, plasma or blood. Avoid using washcloths or sponges, as they can be too abrasive. Instead, use your fingertips to lightly cleanse the tattoo. After rinsing, pat the area dry with a clean towel or allow it to air dry. Never rub or use a rough towel, as this can cause irritation.

Once your tattoo is clean and dry, apply a thin layer of a recommended tattoo ointment or fragrance-free moisturiser to keep the skin hydrated. Avoid petroleum-based products, as they can clog pores and slow healing. Reapply a light amount of moisturiser two to three times a day to prevent excessive dryness while allowing the skin to breathe.

During the first 48 hours, it’s essential to avoid submerging your tattoo in water. Avoid baths, hot tubs, swimming pools and saunas, as prolonged exposure to water can cause irritation and increase the risk of infection. Additionally, protect your tattoo from direct sunlight, as UV rays can fade fresh ink and damage healing skin. If you need to go outside, wear loose clothing over the area instead of applying sunscreen, which should only be used once the tattoo has fully healed.

To ensure optimal healing, avoid activities that cause excessive sweating, as perspiration can introduce bacteria and irritate the tattoo. Refrain from picking, scratching, or peeling the tattoo as it begins to scab, as this can lead to scarring and patchy healing.

Following these aftercare steps in the first 48 hours will help your tattoo heal correctly, keeping the ink vibrant and the skin healthy. As your tattoo continues to heal over the next few weeks, maintain a routine of gentle cleaning and moisturising while being mindful of activities that may irritate the area.
