What Does Tattoing Feel Like

Understanding the sensations of getting a tattoo.

For many people, one of the biggest curiosities about tattoos is the sensation—what does tattooing actually feel like? At OSCO, we’re here to demystify the process and help you feel prepared and confident for your session. The experience varies from person to person, but here’s an insight into what you can generally expect.

The Initial Sensation
When the tattoo machine first touches your skin, you’ll feel a sharp, vibrating sensation as the needle deposits ink. This can be surprising at first, especially if it’s your first tattoo, but most people quickly adjust. The sensation is often described as similar to a cat scratch or a continuous pinch.

Pain Levels by Body Area
The level of discomfort you feel will depend on where you’re getting tattooed. Areas with more muscle or fat, like the upper arm or thigh, tend to be less sensitive. On the other hand, bony areas like ribs, feet, or hands can feel more intense because there’s less cushion between the needle and your bones. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, so what feels manageable to one person might feel more intense to another.

Shading vs. Linework
The type of work being done can also affect how the tattoo feels. Linework, which involves creating the outline of your tattoo, is usually more precise and can feel sharper. Shading or colouring, on the other hand, involves the tattooist going over the same area multiple times, which can create a duller but more prolonged sensation. Many people find shading less painful but more tiring.

How to Stay Comfortable
There are several ways to make the tattooing process more comfortable:

  • Relax: Tension in your body can amplify the sensation. Take deep breaths and try to stay as relaxed as possible.

  • Communicate: Let your artist know how you’re feeling. At OSCO, we’re here to make sure you’re comfortable every step of the way.

  • Distractions: Bring headphones or something to keep your mind occupied during longer sessions.

The Aftermath
Once your tattoo is complete, the area may feel similar to a mild sunburn, warm, tender, and slightly swollen. This is all part of the normal healing process. Following your artist’s aftercare instructions is essential for keeping the area comfortable and ensuring a smooth recovery.

At OSCO, we understand that everyone’s experience is unique. Whether it’s your first tattoo or your next, we’re here to guide you through the process, answer your questions, and ensure your story is told through art you’ll cherish forever.
